For those who are eligible for a 1 – 2 year working holiday visa or a permanent residency visa here are a few tips that will drastically increase your chances of finding employment in Australia in today’s market.

1.       Get a professional CV done before you go, if you are already there then get one done ASAP.

2.       Do not spend all your savings in your first 2 weeks and end up penny less when job hunting.  It is easy to do and a mistake that will usually lead to missing out on jobs and most importantly income.

3.       Buy a car as soon as you arrive, it will drastically increase the amount of jobs you can travel to and apply for.

4.       Do some market research before you leave, find out where there is work for the skills you have on offer. Apply for jobs before you go.

5.       If your occupation needs an Australian Licence or registration – get it done before you go. If you don’t know if your occupation needs a licence then find out well before you go as some licenses take over 3 months to process.

6.       If your occupation is not on the Australian Critical Skills List then try to apply to companies directly and not through an employment/recruitment agency.

7.       Portray yourself as someone looking for a long term job.

8.       Buy or have the money to buy the tools of your trade

9.       If you are eligible to apply for permanent residency and intend to do so someday,  then do it now rather then latter, Migration law changes rapidly so the sooner you make your application the better.

10.   I usually would not say this,  but in today’s market you should take the first job you get – you can always look for a new job later.

Hi. I am from New Orleans and am in the process of negotiating a job in Sydney. Do you have a link for a salary convertor that takes into account cost of living?

Thanks!

Dear Sir,

Ive read through this site and have gained valuable information thank you. I am planning on going to Oz for 1-2 year working holiday (and maybe longer) but I am torn between flying to Sydney or Perth first?? I have 2 years business diploma, certificate's and merits in IT/Communication, office Admin. I also have a year experience in sales, a year in credit control and 2 years assistant accountant in a finance dept in the same company. I also have 11 years in the hospitality industry (senior waitress/ bar person). I have many friends over in Perth so I was leaning more towards that direction but on doing some research it seems like the jobs are more plentiful over the Eastern region?

I am also wondering if you could give me an indication on how much I should bring over with me? I am looking to get a job immediately and will be applying before I go also but I want to travel after ive worked 6 month to Thailand as a holiday do you think I could save money if I was to get a good role say as an assistant accountant to be able to travel?

Your opinions and advice would greatly appreciated J

Thankies,

 Sue
