I'm Karen and I am recently married. We do not have insurance as I am slightly “opposed” to getting one for myself. However, hubby and I have been planning to get with child and I thought to myself we needed one. I've been reading about it and I saw some articles/discussions that some insurance companies require you to be a member for 12 months before you can be covered for the pregnancy expenses. Is my understanding quite correct?

While on research mode about this topic, I came upon some sites: http://www.medibank.com.au/ and http://www.nib.com.au . Would you happen to know how they take care of their policy holders? I think they're good on paper, but it would be lovely if someone could point me to the right direction.

If your husband has a job then for sure he have a health or medical insurance that can make you as a beneficiary.
