Australian Immigration Minister wants States to increase skilled migration
The Australian Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, has urged the states to increase their use of state sponsored skilled migration in order to meet their demands for skilled labour.
The Australian Federal Government’s permanent skilled migration program has been increased by an additional 31,000 skilled migrants under the Rudd Government to help employers in Australia with their current skills shortage.
Chris Evans, the Australian Immigration Minister said “I will be encouraging the states and territories to increase their use of state sponsored migration to better link skilled workers to the economic needs in their states or territories.”
The Australian Government is considering providing the States and Territories with greater flexibility to enable them to sponsor more skilled workers for those areas with skill shortages due to high demand.
Australia Immigration annually is now 190,300 places for 2008/09, of which skilled migration visas make up 133,500 places.
Last year, skilled immigration visas totaled 108,500 places of which 7500 were skilled migrants on immigration visas sponsored by a State or Territory. State or Territory sponsored skilled migrants forms less than 10 per cent of the overall skilled migration, with employer sponsored skilled migration accounting for 20 per cent, and independent migration comprising more than half the skilled migration program.
