Greek Passport Holders Urged to Seek New Passports

Added: (Sun Mar 11 2007)

Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Amanda Vanstone has urged all people holding Greek passports issued before January 1, 2006, to contact the Greek Embassy or consulate urgently to secure new passports if they wish to travel in 2007.

The Greek Government has announced that all passports issued prior to 1 January 2006 cease to be valid on 31 December 2006.

‘International convention requires that people travelling internationally do so on valid passports, irrespective of whether or not they have a valid visa,’ the Minister said.

‘Given the large Greek community living in Australia, and the Greek Immigration to Australia from Greek nationals who visit Australia each year, a number of people may be affected.

‘There are likely to be difficulties if people present at an international departure point with an invalid passport.’

To ensure compliance with European Union regulations, the Greek Government announced that new biometric passports were to be issued through the Greek police from January 1, 2006.

Those seeking further information on the new passport arrangements should contact the Greek Embassy or nearest Consulate.
